A few words of explanation may not be superfluous.Much more common among cattle in former times than since distinct breeds had been developed, was a whitestripe extending along the spine of black or brown cows. This peculiarity of coloration was termed in Irish,Drai,a-fionn, or white-back, and became by aspiration Drimmin or Drimen. Hence we have Drimmin -uionn -dubh,(Drimmin-dhuv) or white-back black cow; Druim-fionn-donn, (Drimmin dhoun) or white-back brown cow, andso on with related names. In poetical literature those titles are allegorical. Drimmin Dhuwas a political password among the IrishJacobites, and allDrimmin songsby no means few breathe a spirit of fealty to the Jacobite cause.VprF. ______.; .
