Píobaire, An 7 2 3 20110510 Apart from regular reed making classes, short module activities successfully completed in re- cent times include workshops on reamer mak- ing and bellows making. Following on from these it will follow that aspiring makers will de- velop all of the many skills involved in suc- cessful bellows design, materials selection, assembly, testing in use. There is more to good bellows making than appears at first and sys- tematic study of these branches of pipe making work will yield good results. Breandán Breathnach often declared, for the benefit of aspiring pipemakers, “the Rowsomes always made a great bellows”. The systematic study of bag making is also planned with the co-operation of experts in this specialist area. Many an otherwise well crafted set of pipes performed poorly until bag faults were de- tected and rectified. The bag materials, assembly, shape and successful tying in of the stocks will get de- tailed study in coming events. CAPITAL CRAFT N a Píobairí Uilleann, in conjunction with Templebar Cultural Trust and The Crafts Council of Ireland, put on an exhibition titled CAPITALCRAFT, depicting the heritage of uilleann pipe making, playing and organisations that has 3 RECENT EARTHQUAKES T he earthquake that shook South Island of New Zealand and its largest city of Christchurch in February and the earth- quake and tsunami that hit north eastern Japan in March, and the nuclear power plant crisis that followed, serve to remind us all as to the fragile and uncertain nature of our existence on the Earth. The massive loss of life and the devasta- tion caused in these horrific calamities make us all pause and reflect. I hope that our piper members and their extended families in these stricken regions were spared and that they survived these dreadful events. The sympathy of all pipers in our international membership goes to those who suffered loss of life, home, property or jobs and we all hope and pray that those affected will have the strength and will to carry on and recover as best they can with the passage of time. PROGRESS ON SYSTEMATIC TRAINING IN PIPE MAKING T hanks to our sponsorship from the Depart- ment of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Af- fairs and from The Arts Council, the pipe making training centre in Clonshaugh, co. Dublin, has been fitted out and commissioned as the “Pipecraft Centre”, and we have held a number of training events there.
