Throughout September and October NaPíobairí Uilleann will be presentingPiperlink in a number of venues rightacross the country. This touring presentationwill give the general public the opportunity tolearn about the history, music and actualmechanics of the instrument. The presenter ofthe enterprise is the well-known traditionalsinger Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, and alsotaking part will be the much-respected author-ity on all things piping Seán Donnelly whowill give a talk on the historyand development of theinstrument itself as well asdetailing the piping heritagein the locality of each venue. The pipers taking part willbe, Seán Potts, Seán McKeon, Donnacha Dwyer,Mick O’Brien, Peter Browne,Tommy Keane, Emmet Gill,Jimmy O’Brien-Moran andÉanna Ó Cróinín. Thoseattending the event will alsobe able to try their hand at apractice set of pipes. I hopethey will be warned in advance that if they getthe bug they will have a hard life ahead ofthem! This is a very imaginative and attrac-tive outreach project for Na Píobairí Uilleannto be involved with, which has the potential togenerate greater interest among the public inthe pipes generally and possibly even attractnew players to the instrument. Details of thevenues hosting Piperlink appear elsewhere inthis edition of An Píobaire and I wouldencourage all members in Ireland to attendone of the shows as it is sure to be of greatinterest to all lovers of pipes and piping. Ourthanks to The Arts Council for funding theventure. One of the best ways to rekindle inter-est in piping during busy times is toattend a piping event. The annualBreandán Breathnach Memorial Evening hasbecome one of our best events during the yearand I certainly enjoyed the lastone. This year’s BreandánBreathnach day and eveningevents will be held in 15Henrietta Street, Dublin onSaturday 1st December andwill feature piping classes andreed-making during the dayand a lecture and informal pip-ing in the evening. Moredetails will appear on the web-site in due course. As I say, it’salways a great day so mark itin your diary at this stage. Inearly December all of Dublinwill be awash with the full trappings of yule-tide but the good news is I have been given anassurance that there will be no Christmastrees, fairy lights or piping Santas in HenriettaStreet. A haven of sanity in an otherwise crazyworld! Anyway, I hope to see as many of youthere as possible with your pipes, and hearingyou play once the formal activities of the dayare over. At the end of the day that’s what thisis all about.3continued on page 4 – Editor: Robbie Hannan, Chairman, Na Píobairí Uilleann Teo.Editorial committee: Robbie Hannan, Noel Pocock, Seán Donnelly, Terry MoylanBoard of Directors: 2006-2007, Robbie Hannan (Chairman); Noel Pocock (Secretary); Patricia Logan (Treasurer); Tom Clarke; Ivan Crowe; Dave Hegarty; Tommy Keane; Nollaig Mac Cárthaigh; Seán Potts,Seán Óg Potts, Johannes Schiefner.Honorary President: Seán PottsPatrons: Peter Carberry, Longford; Dave Hegarty, Tralee; Tommy Kearney, Waterford;Pat Mitchell, Dublin; Neil Mulligan, Dublin; Seán Potts, Dublin.Staff: CEO: Gay Mc Keon; Administrator: Gerry Lyons; Archivist: Terry Moylan; Secretary: Nicola SpainRegistered Office: 15 Henrietta Street, Dublin 1.Telephone: Office: 01-8730093; Fax: 01-8730537; Archive: 01-8735094E-mail: info@pipers.ie Web site: www.pipers.ieMembership: Full & Associate - 45 p.a.
