Over the past ten years or so there hasbeen a significant rise in the numberof piping tionóil taking place all overthe world. I recently attended a tionól inGuadarrama, about forty miles from Madrid. The number of uilleann pipers in Spain isgrowing steadily and they are well-catered forby the pipe-making firm of Hevia, Parrado yAragon, who have supplied almost all theinstruments used by the pipers I encounteredthere. I got the feeling when I was there thatthe interest the uilleann pipes currently havein Spain will continue to grow thanks to thegood work of those who are behind theirgroup, their access to an excellent pipe-mak-ing firm in their own country, and the dedica-tion of the pipers themselves. Details of our forthcoming tionól and AGM,to be held in Dublin on the weekend of 25-27th May, can be found elsewhere in this edi-tion of the journal. The programme is veryenticing and I hope as many of you as possi-ble will be able to attend. I would also like toencourage a high attendance at the AGM. In response to the great interest in pipe-mak-ing which came to light in our recent survey,we have arranged for a course in measuringuilleann pipes at this year’s Willie ClancySummer School in July. Places for thiscourse, which forms a module of the NPUpipe-making course, are strictly limited to tenindividuals and anyone wishing to book aplace would be advised to do so early. Thecourse will be taken by two much-respectedpipe-makers, Geoff Wooff and Cillian ÓBriain. See our website for further details. In relation to the website, we are currently inthe final stages of testing for a number ofimportant enhancements to it including anonline library facility which will allow searchand retrieval of any issue of An Píobaire. Allback issues have been scanned and indexedusing OCR (optical character re-cognition),similar to that used by major newspaper pub-lishers. We plan to add additional publicationsto the online library over time. In addition, thenew look website will feature a members’portal where members can update contactinformation, and exchange information suchas details of their pipes with other members.Among the publications Na Píobairí Uilleannwill be issuing before the end of the year willbe another volume in the series of The Art ofUilleann Piping, which will take the formatof prominent pipers playing some of theirfavourite tunes and talking about theirapproaches to playing them. This is an inter-esting development in the series to date andwill be of huge interest, not only as a learningresource but also has significant value fromarchival and historical perspectives. We will also be arranging tours in variouslocations all over Ireland which will focus onpiping. The fine detail has yet to be decidedbut it is likely that this will involve at leasttwo pipers and a speaker, who will give a pip-ing recital and lecture. I would like to thankGay McKeon and Gerry Lyons for their hardwork in submitting an excellent application tothe Arts Council for this exciting and worth-while project which will draw attention topiping and, hopefully, attract newcomers tothe instrument and its music.
