of the Association as the basis for the design also brings several benefits. The modern typeface and its treatment reflect an organisation focussed on the present and future, and in the use of initials the design is consistent with widespread modern practice, common to many national and international cultural institutions. The full name will continue to be an integral part of the logo and therefore there will never be any disconnect as to what the initials represent. The new NPU graphical identity has a bright, modern, vibrant feel and yet, through the use of the initials and subtle colour palette, also conveys gravitas and is suggestive of the cultural heritage of the organisation. The theme of five concentric rings is designed to be up-lifting and is taken from the scribing on a base-drone sound-box but also suggests sound waves, sharing, music staves and wi-fi/on-line. As we conducted this re-design process we were anxious to retain and build on the identity and reputation that we have acquired over the last 46 years, while clearly defining ourselves as a forward-looking body. We believe the new logo does this, and we hope that members will accept and like it. SCHOLARSHIPS NA PÍOBAIRÍ UILLEANN will award five piping scholarships for 2014.
