Píobaire, An 9 4 3 20130930 A NOTHER CYCLE of week-long tradi- tional music summer schools has fin- ished in various parts of the world and most of them include tuition on the uilleann pipes. No doubt the students will have been enriched and inspired by the tuition they re- ceived and should have plenty of music to practice and work on over the winter months. One of the highlights for me this year at Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy was the participation of Amy Camp- bell and Seán Fulham from CHILDVISION (National Educa- tion Centre for Blind Children) in the piping classes and their inspiring performances at the piping recital, and we look for- ward to hearing their continued progress in the future. Great credit is due to Catherine McEvoy who directs the music programme in CHILDVISION and to Gay McKeon who provides the weekly piping classes there. Our congratulations and thanks is due to all those involved in the sponsored cycle to Mil- town Malbay whose efforts raised over €32,000 towards the detailed theatre design el- ement of the reinstatement of No. 16 Henrietta Street. Two important NPU events will take place in October and one in particular offers an oppor- tunity for the worldwide uilleann piping com- munity to participate. The ACE AND DEUCE OF PIPING concert will take place on Saturday Oc- tober 5th in Liberty Hall, Dublin and we look for the support of the membership in ensuring that the event is well attended. Details of the excellent line up can be found elsewhere in An Píobaire. It is an opportunity for NPU to show- case the best of traditional music, song and dance and this year four uilleann pipers will participate. The third INTERNATIONAL UIL- LEANN PIPING DAY will take place on Saturday October 19th and it is a unique event that connects pipers throughout the world. Hopefully some new lo- cations can be added this year to the 35 or so last year and it is also hoped to increase the live streaming of events on the day. This can be accomplished rela- tively easily with today’s tech- nology and Ken Lynam will be coordinating the proceedings again this year. The event is also an opportu- nity for piping groups in the various locations to attract the interest of prospective pipers or supporters in their area and maybe allow them the chance to try a practice set of pipes and de- mystify to some extent what’s involved in get- ting started. Nonetheless it should at least be a social occasion for pipers to come together and play and possibly share this experience online through the live streaming. Congratulations to Kieran O’Hare on recently becoming a board member of NPU. It is a sig- 3
