Píobaire, An 9 2 4 20130417 4 H UGH QUINN, who was in his youth a pupil of Leo Rowsome, has donated a copy of a music sheet in Leo’s hand, containing the notation for two waltzes that Leo had learned from his father Willie Rowsome. These are reproduced in the current issue. Patrick O’Hare has donated a copy of his new book on reedmaking – A Guide to Reed Making for the Uilleann Pipes. Other acquisitions included a copy of A Collec- tion of Songs in Several Languages, by John Abell, bought in digital from from the British Li- brary, and Aird’s Selection of Scotch, English, Irish and Foreign Airs, volumes 1–6, downloaded from the internet. The first of these is notable for its inclusion of the first Irish song (words and music) ever published, in 1716. The second is re- markable for the fact that, despite its Scottish provenance (it was published in Glasgow in the late 1700s), it is one of the largest collections of Irish dance music in print, with 332 of its 1,200 tunes being identified as Irish by Aloys Fleis- chmann. These have both been printed and bound and may be consulted in our library. Na Píobairí Uilleann has reciprocal arrangements with several other piping and musical bodies to exchange pub- lications. Complete or near-complete runs of many of these publications are available to members in our library. Publications recently received include the following: Pipers’ Review / Iris na bPíobairí – Magazine of the Irish Pipers’ Club, Seattle. Vol XXXI No 4, Au- tumn 2012 Piping Times – Magazine of the College of Piping, Glasgow. Vol. 65, Nos. 5 & 6 Chanter – Journal of the Bagpipe Soc., Spring 2013 Piping Today – Magazine of the National Piping Centre, Glasgow. Issue 62, 2013 Folk Music Journal – Journal of the Vaughan Williams Me- morial Library, Volume 10 number 3, 2013 English Dance & Song – Magazine of the English Folk Dance & Song Society, Spring 2013 Treoir – Magazine of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Iml. 45 uimh. 1 Ulster Folklife – Journal of the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum, Vol. 56, 2013 Sing Out! – Quarterly Journal of the Sing Out! Cor- poration, Vol. 55 no. 2, Winter 2013 Journal of The Northumbrian Pipers’ Society, Vol 33 2012 Newsletter of the Northumbrian Pipers’ Soc., Spring 2013 ~ DONATIONS & ACQUISITIONS ~ now for many years, is always a super week- end of piping, reed making and tuition for all levels, always featuring great sessions and recitals. Be there if you can! NPU ANNUAL TIONÓL. Plan ahead for the Tionól to be held again in Listowel Arms, Listowel Co. Kerry, Ireland on 24th to 26th May. Following last year’s great success, another weekend of powerful music, piping activities and information exchange can be expected. Book your accommodation as early as possible. ANNUAL NPU SPONSORED CYCLE FROM DUBLIN TO MILTOWN MALBAY It is hoped to get 30 participants this year with a view to raising €31,000 to meet the detailed design cost for the theatre, museum and pipe making training centre in a re-building of 16 Henrietta Street. For more information see www.pipers.ie/events/_Cycle2013.htm. Valu- able sponsorship and participation will achieve this goal in the way the past three years helped fund much needed training in pipe making at the PIPECRAFT training centre in Clonshaugh. Consider sponsoring a cyclist and help make Henrietta St. HQ an even greater asset for the world of uilleann piping. If you are living in the greater Dublin area and physically fit, give some thought to the feasibility of getting spon- sorship and doing the cycle yourself! See the calendar of events page for other or- ganised piping activities worldwide. Dave Hegarty Chairman
