Píobaire, An 9 1 8 20130207 8 rently in playing condition and of known qual- ity was felt to be of special importance. The sets’ visual aesthetics and availability also played a part in our initial selection. The probes were put to use in obtaining de- tailed bore measurements of regulators, chanters, and drones; acoustically significant exterior measurements and tonehole data were recorded, as were an array of decorative fea- tures. The end result was sets of tabulated bore data and accompanying dimensioned drawings and flatbed scans. The bore data was obtained using the probes by myself and John Butler, a pipemaker based in Achill. Detailed, dimensioned drawings and sketches were produced onsite by Chris Coe of Cheshire, UK, who is an experienced draughts- man as well as a pipemaker. Chris also assisted in obtaining exterior measurements and drone data. The initial phase took place over one week, with additional weeks required to produce the working drawings and final technical illustra- tions. The time spent in the company of the classic sets was very busy, but very enjoyable, and I think I speak for the other participants in saying that a great time was had by all. The launch of the first of these sets of draw- ings and detailed bore data will take place dur- ing the Leo Rowsome Commemorative event this February, after which they will be made available to NPU members on SOURCE and in printed form. As funds and time permit, we in- tend to expand our work to include additional classic sets by other makers and in other pitches. Further details regarding the methodology and results will appear in a future issue of An Pi- obaire. Bill Haneman ~ OUTREACH PIPING TUITION ~ I N SEPTEMBER 2012 Na Píobairí Uilleann began an outreach teaching programme in a number of schools with the support of Dublin City Council Arts Office. NPU Administrator Gerry Lyons, and uilleann pipe-maker and teacher Donnacha Dwyer made a presentation to primary school children from fifth class in Scoil Mhuire, Marino and to secondary stu- dents at Drimnagh Castle, with the assistance of teachers Ciara Stapleton and Dominic Price. Following the presentations students were in- vited to participate in weekly uilleann piping classes in both schools, using practice sets of uilleann pipes from Na Píobairí Uilleann’s PIPES ON LOAN instrument bank. There was a high demand from students to learn the pipes and, with the assistance of Ciara and Dominic, two groups of four students were selected in Scoil Mhuire and a group of six students was se- lected in Drimnagh Castle.
