Píobaire, An 8 5 7 20121206 7 ~ Reports ~ DUTCH TIONÓL T HIS YEAR’S TIONÓL from September 21- 23, the Dutch Uilleann Pipers Club wel- comed Mickey Dunne as our guest piper from Ireland. At the beautiful location in the eastern province of Drenthe, in Holland, again many pipers gathered to have a fine weekend of piping. It was our 28th Tionól here and it seems to grow every year, slowly but surely. We were very pleased to welcome at least four new pipers, most of them young people which means that the interest in piping in Holland remains in a good way and is developing. As usual, things went in a very relaxed way where Mickey did a great job in teaching during the morn- ing and afternoon sessions finishing with a very fine recital on Saturday night. Here he explained an in- teresting bit of his origin, being born in a travelling people’s home and growing up with traditional music all around him. In Mickey’s usual custom, he invited a harp player present, and later on a gui- tar player to join him during the recital which gave the whole thing an extra burst. A special remark has to be made to the cook who prepared our meal. This man, from Indonesian ori- gin, already did this in the past few years in such a way that many people wondered if they would come for the piping event or for the meal cooked by him. He, again announced that this would be his last time (he is 78 years of age now) but still we hope that he will be present again next year. His fame has gone beyond the Dutch borders now. A special remark also for Patrick Jacob, a great Bel- gian piper, who was willing to run a few classes during the weekend and who did a well appreci- ated job for beginners as well as advanced players. During the weekend Evert Jan ’t Hart did a fine job in reed-making and helping out people with their struggle with reeds. A fine job was done and we saw many (young) pipers leaving with a big smile on their faces. There is no need to explain that during the evenings up to the early hours in the morning, sessions went on, accompanied with drinks and talks, so a good time for everyone. In effect, this year’s Tionól, again, was a great success with loads of music, loads of new and renewed acquaintances and lots of fun.
