Píobaire, An 8 3 13 20120622 13 ~ GLAD YOU CALLED BY ~ Gerry Lyons However there is more which makes this set unusual. The form of the chanter is similar to that in the example in the Pitt Rivers collection, earlier recorded by Balfour in the Journal of the Anthropological Institute, London, 1890. That anonymous example, like this, has only a single four-keyed chanter, but in this set by Kenna the drone stock has no fewer than seven sockets: the regulator, three straight drones and the three tubes of the folded bass drone. Four drones, instead of three, is unusual. It could be that a drone has been substituted for a regu- lator at some stage, although there is no good reason to believe it: stylisti- cally all the drones are en suite. It should be noted that the chanter possi- bly lacks a foot joint, and the lower mount terminates in what appears to be an ivory tenon. P ICTURED BELOW is Eoin Quinn, who called into Henrietta Street with his family re- cently. Eoin is playing a set of pipes made in 1955 by Leo Rowsome for Eoin’s grandfather Hugh Quinn, who at that time was attending classes with Leo at the Piper’s Club in Thomas Street, and also at the School of Music in Chatham Row. Among other things, at his grandfather’s re- quest, Eoin played for us a nice version of “The Trip We Took Over The Mountain”.
