Píobaire, An 8 1 3 20120206 A LMOST FORTY TWO YEARS have passed since the death of Leo Rowsome but his contribution to the promotion of piping is still plain to be seen. Like other leg- endary figures in the uilleann piping world, his reed making and pipe making remains a topic for discussion among students and masters of these specialisms. His instrument designs, recollections of his approach to reed making, his high standard of tuning and piping all con- tinue to intrigue pipers of the present day. In his day, Leo’s music attracted listeners all over Ireland when money was scarce and piping had died out in much of Ireland, Britain and Amer- ica. Apart from concerts, the crackly radio reception was often the only means of hearing the traditional music broadcasts of people such as Leo and others of his time, such as Nelius Cronin of Cork and the Brophys of Dublin and Liam Walsh in Waterford. Not confining himself to Irish music in its tra- ditional boundaries, Leo developed a highly skilful and inventive style of regulator playing to match his chanter playing ability. Perhaps in the future some researcher will examine his ap- proach to his dance music, marches, non tradi- tional tunes and the highly ornamented accompaniment which he adopted for song airs. Such a study would be a great way to fur- ther commemorate Leo’s gigantic contribution to uilleann piping. The IMCO sound files of the music arrangements from his tutor serve as a start in the study of aspects of Leo’s overall approach to piping. THE LEO ROWSOME COMMEMORATIVE EVENT SATURDAY FEBRUARY 25TH 2012 IN HENRIETTA STREET DUBLIN This very successful event has a very good line up of pipers and Eamonn Curran will conduct a pipemaking workshop in the PIPECRAFT Training Centre in Clonshaugh, Dublin. Also fea- tured at the weekend is a talk by Terry Moylan on aspects of Leo’s piping career. A Temple- more Piping Quartet is also fea- tured and the Saturday evening will be completed with music by some of Leo’s pupils, in- cluding Néillidh Mulligan and Joe Mc Kenna who will be MC for the evening. TIONÓIL IN NEW ZEALAND AND SAINT LOUIS The New Zealand Uilleann Pipers’s Associa- tion 22nd Annual Tionól will be held in Taranaki in March 2012. The St. Louis Tionól will take place from April 20 to 22nd. The piping tutors are Brendan Collins and Jim Morrison in addition to Michael Cooney and Pat Cannady.
