Píobaire, An 7 5 9 20111214 9 We are very encouraged by the response to the announcement of the course from all those who have expressed a desire to take up pipemaking and indeed from those who are al- ready members of this distinguished fraternity and we would like to express or gratitude for the kind wishes of everyone. We are looking forward to a very bright new year providing ever more Uilleann pipemak- ing courses and hopefully building lasting friendships and alliances with all who join us. RAY O’TOOLE Glasgow I AM CURRENTLY trying to establish a piper’s club based in the city of Glasgow with the grandly named title “the Scottish Uilleann Piper’s Society” with limited success. At the mo- ment we have a basis of 4 members with another half dozen who have been in contact and ex- pressed interest. Anyway, the point of my mes- sage is to ask if it’s possible that you could carry some sort of advertisement in your publication An Piobaire? I know various clubs and meet-ups have been attempted in Scotland before but for whatever reason they seem to have come and gone so I’m sure this club will face similar challenges. Luckily we have the support of the excellent Jarlath Henderson who is now based in Glas- gow and we also have an excellent venue, the College of Piping, Otago Street, for our meet- ings! Is there someone available who could ad- vise me on the best approach to building a strong piper’s club? If so I would be very in- terested in having a chat. TONY COLLINS Glasgow 07794984971 New Piping Piece for 9/11 T HE IRISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA, with pipes soloist Pádraic Keane (this year’s recipient of the Gradam Ceoil TG4 Music Award, Young Musician of the Year), took part in a concert at the United States embassy in Dublin on the 11th September to commemorate the 10th an- niversary of the attack on the World Trade Cen- tre in New York. The performance included a specially written piece – Termōn, by composer Mícheál Ó Súil- leabháin, a six minute piece for pipes and orches- tra. The piece was also performed at the Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Centre, New York on the 31st Octo- ber. Pádraic Keane Courtesy of TG4
