Píobaire, An 7 5 4 20111214 4 A COPY OF another early collection of Irish music has been added to our library. This is the c. 1841 collection Gems of Ireland. Typ- ically for 19th century publications, the sub- title tends towards the verbose and describes it as 200 airs, Containing the most popular of Moore’s Melodies, all the National Airs, and the Celebrated Melodies of Carolan, Connolan &c. Collected from the most Authentic Sources, and Arranged for the Flute by J. Clinton. Also acquired for our library were copies of the first three volumes of the periodical The Citizen, covering the years 1839 to 1841. This contains a selection of Irish music collected by the editor, Henry Hudson from the Galway piper Paddy Conneely and others. Two copies of the 1841 volume were acquired, and one is being offered for sale. See the advertisement on page 31 for details. The Northumbrian Pipers Society have for- warded a copy of their publication NPS Folio 4 – 2011, a collection of tunes suitable for the Northumbrian Smallpipes, and Comhaltas Ce- oltóirí Éireann have donated copies of recently published CDs. Na Píobairí Uilleann has reciprocal arrangements with several other piping and musical bodies to exchange pub- lications. Complete or near-complete runs of many of these publications are available to members in our library. ~ DONATIONS & ACQUISITIONS ~ Publications recently received include the following: Pipers’ Review / Iris na bPíobairí – Magazine of the Irish Pipers’ Club, Seattle. Vol XXX No 3, Summer 2011 Chanter – Journal of the Bagpipe Soc., Autumn 2011 Newsletter of the Northumbrian Pipers’ Society, Au- tumn 2011 Piping Times – Magazine of the College of Piping, Glasgow. Vol. 63, No. 12 & Vol. 64, Nos. 1 and 2 Folk Music Journal – Journal of the Vaughan Williams Me- morial Library, Volume 10 number 2, 2012 Sing Out! – Quarterly Journal of the Sing Out! Corpo- ration, Vol. 54 no. 3 sociated construction works will enable NPU to improve the range of our services to the tra- ditional music community. There is much work to be done but getting planning approval is a major step along the way. INTERNATIONAL UILLEANN PIPING DAY This took place on Saturday 15th October. Pip- ing, reed-making and related music events took place around the world in different time zones to get uilleann pipers together and to raise awareness of the instrument.
