Píobaire, An 7 4 5 20110920 5 AMONG our collection of documents for some time we have had a photocopy of a page from the early 20th century periodical The Gaelic Journal showing the picture below, of a small statue of a piper, clearly modeled on Haverty’s “Limerick Piper”. To our astonishment, the statue appeared for sale on an online auction during the summer, and was ~ DONATIONS & ACQUISITIONS ~ being offered for sale by a dealer located around 20 minutes walk from Henrietta Street. A deal was quickly done, and an item of great interest to pipers, that has been knocking around Dublin city for over a century, was added to our collection. We are obliged to Nicholas Carolan for provid- ing the rest of the story, in the form of the arti- cle from The Gaelic Journal of July 1903, explaining the picture, which is re-printed below. Briefly, it says that the statue, of clay, was made by one Thomas Fitzpatrick of O’Connell Street, Dublin, and that he was con- sidering producing and selling copies of it. An image of William Talbot was located in the National Library of Ireland, and is described on page 22. Dave Hegarty has nade a number of interesting contributions to our library, including a history of Conradh na Gaeilge in Kerry, and photo- copies of songbooks and other material. Brian Gallahar has forwarded a booklet pub- lished to celebrate 25 years of the South Sligo Summer School, and Denis Grehan a copy of a photograph from the early 1930s showing the Garda Céilidhe Band, which at that time in- cluded a piper in its ranks. This is reproduced in our centre pages. Na Píobairí Uilleann has reciprocal arrangements with several other piping and musical bodies to exchange pub- lications. Complete or near-complete runs of many of these publications are available to members in our library. Publications recently received include the following: Piping Today – Magazine of the National Piping Cen- tre, Glasgow. Issue 52, 2011 Treoir – Magazine of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Iml. 44 uimh. 2 English Dance & Song – Magazine of the English Folk Dance & Song Society, Autumn 2011 Piping Times – Magazine of the College of Piping, Glasgow.
