Píobaire, An 7 3 5 20110711 5 ~ NEWS & EVENTS ~ I T IS SURPRISING that despite living in an era of mass communications, there are still many gaps in knowledge amongst the general pub- lic about the uilleann pipes and indeed many of the other instruments at the heart of Irish tradi- tional music. A recent article in a national news- paper reported that a piper walked in front of a funeral procession “to the haunting sound of the uilleann pipes”. Clearly some education on the basics of the uilleann pipes is still required. On Tuesday 28th June, we were de- lighted to have Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht launch PIPE UP, an Irish Traditional Music Resource DVD-ROM. Produced by Na Píobairí Uilleann, with assistance from The Arts Council Deis pro- gramme, PIPE UP presents high quality photo- graphs, audio and video samples, in addition to a structured fact file for each traditional instrument. Information in the PIPE UP resource is organised to suit primary or secondary level students or in- deed anyone wishing to learn more about the fun- damental elements of Irish traditional music. PIPE UP also gives a brief introduction to the various types of tunes and allows practical ap- plication via an interactive tutor for the tin whistle. A selection of simple exercises, and easy, intermediate and advanced tunes are in- cluded, and the user can play along via an at- tractive and easy to use animated interface specifically developed for the re- source. The PIPE UP interactive tutor allows the tune to be played faster or slower as required and also allows musical notation or simple ABCs to be displayed in real time as the animation demon- strates the tin whistle fingering required for the tune. A selection of tune books and workbooks are also included and, thanks to a beautiful translation by Dublin- based member, Éanna Mac Cába, the resource can be used in either Irish or English. For the section on the uilleann pipes, a series of short high-quality videos, featuring Glasgow piper Sheila Friel and narrated in both Irish and English by Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, outlines the basic elements of the uilleann pipes including an intro- NEW MUSIC TEACHING DVD Minister Deenihan launching PIPEUP Gerry Lyons demonstrating PIPEUP Johnny Savage Johnny SavageJohnny Savage
