Píobaire, An 7 3 4 20110711 4 CANON GOODMAN MATERIALS A T a presentation event in Cork on May 12th, Dr. Gavin Goodman – great-great- grandson of the famous Canon James Goodman of Dingle, piper and Trinity College Professor of Irish – presented a notebook to the Univer- sity College library. Miriam O’Donovan, who is working on a doctorate based on the study of Canon Goodman’s song notebooks and related manuscripts, conducted the proceedings and sang three songs from the collection and ex- plained the importance of the latest acquisition by UCC. Aoife and Deirdre Granville of Din- gle, (harp, flute and fiddle) provided music se- lections from Goodman’s tune collection and I was more than happy to join in with them for a few tunes. A great time was had by all! In mak- ing this further very important notebook avail- able to scholars through UCC, Dr. Goodman has shown the same generous public-spiritedness as his illustrious piping predecessor. This note- book, dating from James Goodman’s student days in Trinity College, approximately 1850 or so, will require detailed scrutiny to see if there are any possible references to piping contacts or any other notes relevant to the piping scene of those days either in Dublin or Kerry. Subsequently Dr. Goodman and his wife Vicki visited Dingle. Following a concert in St. James Church, which featured fine music from piper Eoin Duignan, the Granville sisters and others, we were shown the family tomb of ancestors of Canon Goodman. Finally Dr. Goodman pre- sented to me a copy of the Book of Common Prayer dated 1712. The text is both in English and Irish and will merit serious study over time. The book gives an indication of how far back the Goodman family spoke, read and wor- shipped using Irish texts such as this one. Even- tually this volume will be housed in NPU’s museum/archives. The Goodman family has yet again generously enriched our cultural lives. Apart from this they are very interesting and cheerful company, doubtless, following the tra- dition of Canon Goodman, piper, music collec- tor and Irish language scholar and much more. DAV E HEGARTY Chairman O UR main acquisition in the past couple of months has been the Brocas painting fea- tured on the cover. See page 6 for details of this. A facsimile of the early tune collection Aria di Camera was obtained from the British Library and will be processed for inclusion in our online IMCO site shortly. Dave Hegarty has donated photocopies of several rare songbooks and other articles of interest, and The National Folklore Collection, UCD, have do- nated copies of the Journal of the Irish Folk Song Society, containing Donal O’Sullivan’s edition of the Bunting collections. ~ DONATIONS & ACQUISITIONS ~ Na Píobairí Uilleann has reciprocal arrangements with several other piping and musical bodies to exchange pub- lications.
