Píobaire, An 7 2 9 20110510 9 T HE LATEST DVD of highlights from the RTÉ archival series Come West along the Road features a respectable selection of uilleann pipers among the varied featured musicians, singers and dancers of the early 1960s to the late 1980s: Robbie Hannan, Peter Browne, Gay McKeon, Sean Seery, Tommy Keane in the Thatch Ceili Band, Liam O’Flynn in Planxty, Finbar Furey in a family trio, and Willie Clancy in duet with fiddle player Joe O’Leary. Produced by Nicholas Carolan of the IRISH TRADITIONAL MUSIC ARCHIVE, the DVD contains over three hours of footage and is suitable for all regions. Not many people know that he was also a piper. At an NPU recital in the 1980s he put down the fiddle at one stage, donned a practice set and played a few tunes on the chanter.
