Píobaire, An 7 1 16 20110224 J OSEPH GEHOT was born in Belgium in 1756. As a professional musician he toured Europe for some time before, around 1780, settling in London where he per- formed on the violin and also published cham- ber music and theoretical works. The latter included A treatise on the Theory and Practice of Music, in three parts (London 1786). An ad- vertisement on the title page announced that: “The first part treats of practical music in gen- eral. The second, of the thorough bass, and the third, of counterpoint or composition. Together with scales of every musical instrument; and the art of fingering on keyed, and bowing on stringed, instruments explained in various ex- amples.” In 1791 he started playing with Haydn’s or- PASTORAL PIPE INSTRUCTIONS F 16
