Píobaire, An 6 5 4 20101217 4 outstanding and excellently fitted out pipe- making training centre in Clonshaugh, Dublin. It is here that our pipe-making cours- es will be held. We are currently finalising course development and the related documen- tary material to give aspiring pipe-makers the best learning and practical experience possi- ble. Some members of NPU have recently made generous donations to help us complete the present phase of fit-out and equipment acquisition. These are very deeply appreciat- ed and will be applied to assist us with this very important initiative. Upcoming events The annual Leo Rowsome event will take place on Saturday 26th February 2011, and the annual NPU Tionól will be held on 27th to 29th of May in the Step House Hotel, Borris, County Carlow. Early booking is advisable. Archive / Museum I appeal to any members who have any arte- facts, photos, manuscripts, recordings or pub- lications, which would add to our collection. To those who would like to donate them, as either originals or copies for our archive, we would much appreciate such donations or access. Also we would greatly appreciate pipes or parts of pipes for the pipes-on-loan scheme or our planned museum development. For the future we wish to set about commem- orating the music of Tommy Reck. To make progress on this substantial task I would appeal for any photographs or other material related to Tommy’s life, or privately-held recorded music not yet brought to our atten- tion. On the 20th anniversary of his death we would wish to plan this work with as much available material as possible and undiscov- ered material relating to Tommy, or indeed any other piping-related recordings or memo- rabilia relating to any piper or piping event whatever. Help ensure our continuity We want to ensure that the great progress of NPU continues despite the increasing chal- lenges in securing grants from government agencies. In order to ensure that we deliver the full range of planned pipe-making training courses we need to secure the necessary funds. We have been very encouraged to receive great support from the Galway Pipers Group who recently held a piping concert and raised €900 towards the PIPECRAFT fund for pipe-making training. I would ask all mem- bers to consider helping us by asking their friends and relations to become stakeholders with NPU, by taking out associate member- ship and/or by undertaking fundraising activ- ities. Encourage beginners to become mem- bers. Those who have let their membership lapse, we earnestly ask them to please renew it. NPU has a great record of achievement since its founding in 1968 and we want to ensure that our ambition and vision is not adversely impacted by lack of financial resources. New DVD How heartening is to see a distinguished and long standing member produce a new DVD on his own initiative! Pat McNulty of Glasgow, master of piping and music compo- sition in the tradition presented me with a DVD of his own quartet of pipers. A fine pro- duction it is with some very interesting melodies and arrangements. Combining nice tune selections and production, it will serve to re-awaken enthusiasm for the idea of the pipers’ quartet, so skilfully developed by Leo Rowsome. I hope to fully describe Pat’s DVD in the next edition. Well done Pat. Dave Hegarty Chairman – continued from page 3
