Píobaire, An 6 5 3 20101217 I n this edition of An Píobaire, we are glad to announce a number of new and very important developments in our efforts to enhance the musical experience, information and development facilities of our members and our committed friends and associate members. SOURCE The on-going work of cataloguing and making available and accessible our vast and increasing archive of piping and related music material has reached a major breakthrough. SOURCE, our members’ online music access has now been launched. What great possibilities for learning music from a wide range of old and very interesting and his- torical music manuscript collection! We can hear sound files of the music transcriptions of so many old versions of tunes, among them Leo Rowsome’s tutor, as well as some really rare but fascinating col- lections of Irish and other related music forms. In addition to photos, talks and recitals, also available to view are some of the footage of master pipe-makers filmed while making and talking about intricate and very challenging aspects of their pipe-making craft and sci- ence. These sources, combined with excellent tuition examples and advanced explanation of piping techniques accompanied by expertly notated versions of the tunes and airs are a marvellous benefit to members worldwide. On behalf of the members I most gratefully thank all of the staff and management team as well as the trainees and pipe makers who have given so generously of their time in planning, pursuing, developing and uploading and arranging all of the many hours of filming and other con- tents of this vast resource, to serve mem- bers worldwide. Making this material available shows that we can set the standard for an archive, a teaching and artistic development resource of the highest standard. Fit-out completion of Pipe-Making Training Centre Over the last four years we have been work- ing on the development of a course of instruc- tion/education in all aspects of the art and intricate craft of uilleann pipemaking.
