AIRS and SONGS 17Among other notables glorified in an anonymous Irish song was a KingPhilip of Spain whose aid washoped for. We find nothing in the life of the monarch to arouse the enthusiastic toast Heres ahealth to the gallant King Philipr as translated by Dr. George Sigerson. There is no record of thecomposers name. Three versions of this fine melody are submitted for the purpose of illustratii g thetendency of time and talent to favor the creation of variants of popular compositions. It may be addedthat the setting in The Hiberniaa Afz&se published in Lon lon 1787 is nearly identical with that in BILrkThwmoths Collection, and differs not materially from a setting in The Stanford Petrie Collection of IrishMusic without note or comment. The editor has taken the liberty of correcting the Irish titles as printedin the originals.Slainte I igh Pilib(Health to King Philip)Burk Thwiwtbs12 Scotch a d 12 Irish Airs 1743Jfoderato.__ __ ___ ___ _______r - r r r15 __ ___ ______ ____ r r r r r r r - r____ ______ ___ __r rnfF ___ 4 _ . _V _ - _________ J __Jrr __ _( ______ -J J _____ I _____ __ __ _____r r r r r r if F F r
