Thebasic ornamental devices he relied on are, forthe most part, standard in most pipers’ reper-toires, and not difficult to execute. If, howev-er, one is to pick a single element whichdefines his style more than any other, it wouldbe his articulation of the music by techniquesassociated with close fingering styles. This isachieved by closing the chanter and allowingNote: chanter closures are indicated by the ‘comma’ sign, and popped notes by the ‘carat’ (^) sym-bol in bars 19, 28 & 29 of “O’Higgins’ Hornpipe”.
