It seems that the important events in thepiping calendar are no longer confined toany particular period in the year. Betweennow and year end there are a number ofattractive and exciting events taking placewhich will prove to be of great interest topipers and lovers of piping. The Ace andDeuce of Piping Concert in Dublin's LibertyHall on Sunday 28 September boasts anextremely impressive line upincluding Seán McKiernan, andtwo dynamic pipes/fiddle duets, namely Seán McKeon and LiamO'Connor and Paddy Keenan andPaddy Glackin. Seán and Liamhave been enthralling audienceswith their powerful and excitingmusic for a number of years nowand the concert will also give anopportunity to hear the great duetplaying of Paddy Keenan and Paddy Glackinwho were first recorded on Paddy Keenan’sfirst solo album and indeed they subsequentlymade a duet album based on the success ofthose initial terrific tracks. Other prestigiousperformers will also be taking part in this con-cert, full details appear elsewhere in this edi-tion and tickets are now available. Concertsof this nature are unfortunately not that com-mon in Dublin these days so I anticipate itwill be well supported by the traditionalmusic fraternity.Another important date in our calendar ofevents is the Breandán BreathnachCommerative event which will be held in ourpremises in Henrietta St on Saturday 6th ofDecember. This event has become increas-ingly popular in recent years and will featurepiping classes taken by three stalwarts of theLondon pipers club Billy Browne, PaulCarton and Stephen Scales, reed making classwith Alan Burton a lecture by our formeradministrator Liam McNulty on the earlyyears of Na Píobairí Uilleann and a pipingrecital. I would encourage as many of you aspossible to attend what is sure to bean entertaining function. Many piping enthusiasts in Irelandhad the opportunity last year toenjoy PIPERLINK, an innovativepresentation on the history andmusic of the uilleann pipes and, given the success Piperlink hadhere in Ireland last year, we aredelighted that it will be touring in anumber of venues in North America in earlyOctober. I am sure that it will be wellreceived there. PIPERLINK will be presentedby Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, Seán Donnellywill be giving an historical overview of thehistory and development of the instrument aswell as alluding to a number of famous play-ers on both sides of the Atlantic and the pres-entation will also feature the piping of GayMcKeon and Tommy Keane. As we head towards the last quarter of 2008 itis worth reviewing the ever expanding list ofpiping events which are held throughout theworld which you may consider attending.Robbie Hannan3
