19Ifirst heard this air in Dublin, playedexpertly and beautifully by Paddy Glackinon his 1991 release, In Full Spate. I lovedthe melody instantly, but on countless listen-ings over the intervening years, I came to bejust as impressed with the highly developedstructure and style of the tune itself. It seemsto follow an AABCB format, which is unusu-al. The first part has a decidedly plaintivemodal character, which is contrasted with thelightness of the first bars of the second sec-tion. This lightness is created by a shift to amajor feel; A-major, in Paddy Glackin’s play-ing of the tune. But the essential melancholyof this most singular piece of music is notdriven away for long, returning in an almosttidal fashion as each part gives way to thenext. Perhaps it is this unique feature thatcaused John Doherty, the air’s originalsource, to describe it as ‘unearthly’ in remarksrecorded in The Northern Fiddler.continued on page 20 –  B   C    B    (Double A)       
