Gay had beenacting CEO since June of last year and he hasproven to be an outstanding and dynamic fig-ure in that role. I have no doubt he has muchmore to offer Na Píobairí Uilleann in theyears ahead and I know the board and themembers look forward to working with him,and wish him well in all his endeavours. Many of you will have heard by now that thegreat Co. Kildare piper Liam O’Flynn wasawarded the accolade of Traditional Musicianof the Year by TG4 at a televised concert inCork over the Easter weekend. Liam’s contri-bution to traditional music, and to uilleannpiping in particular, is legendary, and it iswonderful to see that his contribution hasbeen acknowledged in this way. Liam hascrafted his own very distinct and tasteful pip-ing style and tone which has had a majorimpact on pipers the world over for the pastforty years. His music has a draw and anappeal all of its own and, like many of thegreats before him, the more you listen to hisplaying the more you find in it. Finally, I was sorry to hear of the recent deathof Tom White, the Co. Wexford piper andpipe-maker. Tom and his friend and fellowWexford man Séamus Mac Mathúna werestaying in the same B&B as me during myfirst visit to Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy in1977 and I have fond memories of Tom’skindness and good sense of humour.
