15Number 1949.147 is a set by MichaelEgan which is unusual in that it doesnot have the usual Egan tear-dropkeys but instead the Coyne fiddle style ofkeys. It is a B flat with the chanter 18.4 inch-es long. The throat is 4.03mm wide and so it seemsquite perfect. The set is boxwood, ivory andbrass. The stock is solid as Egan’s always are. Geoff Wooff reckons that the bass regulator isnot original and if not then it is a very finereplacement. The ivory mounts on it do lookmuch newer than the rest. I think that this andthe O’Hannigan Coyne are the best completesets in the collection and for that matter in theworld.14This is the famous eccentric set by theMaloney Brothers of Kilrush [1938.60]. The chanter is an 18 inch and ismade of cocus. The rest of the set is ebony, ivory, bone and nickel silver. Five regulatorsand two drones–tenor and bass. The chanterthroat is 4.3mm which is perhaps a little large.Original bellows. The set is an amazing thingto look at but I can’t imagine anyone playingit – that must have been amazing.
