The 21st TiondI of NPU vas held in the Bloomfield House Hotel outside Mullingar at the beginning of May last.It turned out to be a very enjoyable and relaxed Tion6l. It was wonderful, among others, to see that delightfuloctogenarian Dan ODowd playing pipes on the Friday night. The high point of the weekend was certainly PatMcNultys talk and his reflections on the first Tionol in 1968 and also his video presentation on the 1971 Tion l.His vividmemories and his clear arid open presentation was an enjoyable experience. The annual general meetingitself was well attended with interesting contributions all round. Discussions varied from the use of our head-quarters, set dancing in Henrietta Street, promoting piping in schools and other locations around Ireland, toclasses and regulator playing. Unanimous agreement was reached at the meeting that the current membershipsubscriptions should be increased. The over IS subscriptions was increased to 10 and the under 18 to ).Gabriel McKeon was elected as the new Secretary of NPU and Ken McLeod and Tadhg 6 Meara were elected tothe committee. Out thanks go Nollaig Mac Crthaigh the outgoing Secretary, and to Mick Slevin and Tom Clarkefor their dedicated work and valuable contributions to the committee over the past years. The main talkingpoint following the meeting was the decision to have next years TiondI in the Mourne County Hotel in Co. Down. Some members expressed apprehension about travelling north of the border and more were highly enthusiasticabout it. My own experience of two rniniTionil in the same county a few years ago was delightful and anone occasion over 40 pipers from the north attended. The main reason why the first one was held there wasbecause of the fact that the Tionl that year was in Co. Waterford and time and traiel were major considera-tions. I feel it is a fitting gesture to those pipers and as a non-political organisation to have it in Co. Downafter 20 years in existence. And speaking of gestures, a 21st birthday cake in the shape of a bag, bellows andchanter made by Marion Gill in London with meticulous detail was a charming one.Archival SchemeThe main emphasis over the last two months on the Archival project has been the research, preparation andmounting of a new and updated exhibition ot pipes and piping in the ILAC Library in Dublin, which was theculmination of weeks of arduous work by the project team among others. The exhibition itself was opened byAlderman Carmencita Hederman Lord Mayor of Dublin who paid tribute to the work and ideals of NPIJ. Lunch-time recitals and video presentations were held each day and feedback from members and the general publicwas very encouraging. The exhibition will be placed on permanent view in Henrietta Street and will also beavailable to travel tovarious locations around the country. Already there have been enquiries from a librarian inDerry asking to display it. The departure of Finola 6 Siochr from the scheme is a major loss and on behalfof all concerned I would like to thank her for trojan work in setting up and co-ordinating the project from thebeginning and wish her well in her new career. Fortunately we were able to call on Margaret Black, the Assis-tant Co-ordinator, to take over the task, and Nicholas Osullivan, a trainee on the project has been appointedAssistant Coordinator. At present plans are being made for the second phase of the project.Doran TapeThe promised release of all the recording made in 947 of Johnny Doran by Comhairle Bhaloideas ireann oncassette tape will take place on 3 July at the Willie Clancy Summer school and is reviewed elsewhere in AnPfobaire. This is the first music cassette to be issued by the Comhairle from its archives, and I trust it will bethe first of many to come.iNillidh MulliganTionc5lCONTENTSAdvertisements Review - Johnny Doran tape 5Editorial I Seanchas 7From the Archives, Music of Johnny Doran 4,5 Technical articles 6News 2 Tionl I 988 3
