AN UNUSUAL SET OF PIPESThese pipes came to my notice a few years ago, aridwhile doing sonic restoration work on them recently Idecided to write a short account of them. They arethe property of the Depar tn ent of Music I.C.C.The construction is unusual in that the relativelynarrow body (c. I pP) is pierced with 6 lorigittichinalbores. The result is all integr& unit with 2 dronesand 2 regulators. The bass drone length is achievedby uniting 3 of the 6 bores. One other bore is for abarttone drone and Ihe remaining bores are baritoneand tenor regulators. The drones are tuned by tele-scopic brass (probably were originally silver) tUbeswith wooden inserts. The baritone regulator has onlyone note viz. B (i lornirial pitch) arid the tenorregulator has G, A, R and C. The D key in thebaritone regulator is placed to enable the player toharnionise the the G, A and R notes on the tenorregulator. Although, from the outside it appearsthat the 5 keys are a ll i i i a line, the tone holes aredrilled in an anguar fashion into t he respective bores. The set is accompanied by a double chanter (14 inlength) and it 5, En way, odd that the chanter isconstructed from two pieces of ebony glued together. Why, if he could put 6 bores accurately through thebody did he chose a simple method for the chanter? The pipes are in excellent condition mounts arein ivory and keys are sterling silver. McGregor(probably Malcolm) worked in Carey St. in Londonabout 1810 and also made tine flutes. A set verysimilar to this is in the Reid School of Music inEdinburgh and possibly another of siniilar design inthe San Antonio Museum of Transportation, Texas.Any aspiring pipemnaker who looks towards moderntechnology to answer his problems could well do withexamining these pipes. It nay be that [ he answersare not ahead of is but behind us!Eugene LaniheBaritoneReg i 1 alBaritoneDroneto achieve lengthARRANGEMENT OF SIXBORES OF THE BODYLOUDO N Namefrom page 4The Generals genial tone slips on page 106 wherebe castigates the Scottish Arts Council for en-couraging an attempt to disprove the glorrous legacyof the MacCrimmons - lie does not feel that thecouncil redressed the balance by subsiding the ptiblication of the present book. The unnamed work underattack is The Maccrimmon Legend: the madness ofAngus MacKay , by Alastair Campsie, which appearedin I 9S0. Like his coauthor General Richardson feelsthat abusing and villifying all author i sulficieilt torefute his scholarly work. illis present book was allopportunity to refute Camnpsies work; not only wasthe opportunity not taken but the book is a perfectexample of the type of writing and research, or lackof research, Campsie attacked. The hook is, by theway, beautifully produced.Sednl)onnellyTenorRegulatorBassDroneTwo Bores joinedBrass Tubebushed WithPhoto & drawing Eugene Lambea
