CompetitionNPU was asked by AntOireachtas to nominate anadjudicator for the PipingCompetition. In a letter tothe Oireachtas Secretary wedeclined, stating that NPUdid not agree with competi-tions among pipers. I-lowcan one say who is thebest, when differing stylesare involved? What dis-tinguishes one player, technically excellent, fromanother of equal excellence, but with another style?Taste, that of the adjudi-cator, then becomes thecriterion. Hardly a validbasis on which to choose -as beauty is in the eye ofthe beholder - taste is inthe ear of the listener.NPU is a Society ofpeople with a specialistinterest - Uilleann Pipesand Piping. There is nogood reason why we shouldcontrive to set membersapart from each other. Werecognise ability and thebrilliance of individualsWithin our own circle, tra-ditional music circlesgenerally, and among thepublic at large we acknow-ledge the sophistication andgreat playing of thesepeople. We do not feelthe need to engender ri-valry and divisiveness bybeing part of or organisingevents which put somegreat players into a lesserposition than others. Thatis NPUs stance.Broadly that also wasthe position of BreandnBreathnach. I-Ic had arrivedat this through a thoughtout process as he had inthepast adjudicated and par-ticipated in competitions. So his attitude was a con-sidered and carefully evalu-ated one, rather than anemotional response. Theseviews were well known andas always with him, wellaired. It was therefore, quitesurprising, that anyoneshould even consider cal-ling a trophy for pipingcompetition - The BreandnBreathnach Memorial TrophyMaybe it should not besurprising and ought belooked on merely as ano-ther example of insensiti-vity or disregard for theexpressed views of the man.NPU asked An tOireachtasnot to call the trophy theBreandn Breathnach Mem-orial Trophy. Our letterwas not answered. Is therenot something particularlyobscene in associating apersons name with some-thing to which he wasopposed?ActivityLiam McNulty .A point often raised bymembers is the lack of useof the building in HenriettaStreet by the pipers. Otheractivities occur but as arule it is only on Tuesdaynights that our - membersuse the premises, and onenight a week is very little.A Piping Night once amonth, will commence inJanuary 987. Dates appearin the Forthcoming Eventssection. The format will be8 p.m : Talk or demonstra-tion on some aspect ofpipes or piping;9 p.m . Music - pipes only.Members of the public areinvited and it is hoped thatNPU members, not onlyfrom Dublin, but areasthroughout Ireland, shallattend and play. There willnot be any admission chargebut donations will be grate-fully received. The NPUCommittee looks forward tothis being a worthwhileactivity, a forum for dis-seminating knowledge onpiping, an opportunity forplayers to perform both forfellow members and thepublic, and a social occasion, nueeOeUCOeRLO nOseDUTCH TIONOLFor the second time in thehistory of the Netherlandsa Tiondi Piobaireachta washeld on the weekend of 5, 6& 7 September 1986. Theevent took place in asmall building in the vicinity of Haarlem, in thewest of the country. Thoughthe number of pipers atten-ding was smaller than lastyear (fourteen this year toseventeen last year), we doregard the Tiond! as a suc-cessful one. Nick Adamsfrom Miltown Malbay wasin charge of the workshopand he has been of greathelp to us, both in givinglessons and in demonstratingreedmaking. It was decided to forma Pipers Club to make surethat meetings can be heidregularly, and plans are nowbeing made to send themembers a newsletter everynow and again. We estimatethat about 25 pipers areliving in Holland, many ofthem being addicted totheir instrument. Anyonewho wishes to obtain infor-mation about piping in theNetherlands should contact:Peter Van LeimptVelserstraat 13,2023 EA I-harlem,Holland.RequestPier KuipersMembers are asked to sendin articles for publicationin An Plobaire. We doreceive excellent articles onpipes, and pipemaking, . reed-making, archival and histori-cal matters. What we needare articles relating to pre-sent day playing - in itswidest sense. So much thebetter if they are contro-versial and elicit response. All contributions are wel-come.2
