4MORE MUSIC FROM JOHNNY DOR N (continued )We continue our transcription from a selection played by JohnnyDoran with My Love is in Pmerica, played inrnediately afterColonel Frazer which we had in our last issue. Johnnys com-plete playing of the tune is notated here. The original recor-ding was made by Kevin Danaher, of the the Folklore Corrmission,in 1948, and is notated here by permission of the Head of theDepartment of Irish Folklore, UCD.Jackie SmallNPU SOUND ARCHIVENow that the constructionwork is effectively finishedin Henrietta Street, thetasks confront us of furnish-ing and equipping the buil-ding to fulfill the purposefor which it is intended. One of these purposes isthe housing of the NPUarchive. This consists ofcollections of differentkinds, books, manuscripts, photographs, press cuttings, videos, sound recordings etc.Much discussion will beneeded to design an archivesystem which will suit us.One of the NPU roomsis designed as a SoundStudio, and specificationsfor the equipment requiredhave been drawn up, thoughthe equipment itself hasnot yet been installed. Dis-cussions must begin some-where, and I would like toput forward some sugges-tions on the NPU SoundArchive. These are basedlargely on the system inuse in the sound collectionin the Department of IrishFolklore, UCD. I hope thatthese stray thoughts willprovoke suggestions andimprovements from ourmembers. The purpose and aimsof the Sound Archive firstof all need to be clearlyset out. Possible suggestionshere would be;I The assembly of a com-plete collection of allsound recordings evermade by uilleann pipers.2. A recording policy, whereby recordings wouldbe made of present-daypipers, in the NPU studio,in the field, at theTiondil, the Willie ClancySummer School etc.3 An access policy, where-by this material wouldbe made available forstudy to members, re-searchers, teachers, stu-dents etc.4 A publishing policy, whereby collections fromthe NPU archive wouldbe released, e;g. on cas-sette, for commercialsale, or as accompanyingcassettes to NPU publi-cations.The most important andfragile possessions of theSound Archive will be itsoriginal recordings . Thesemay be:CYLINDERDISC (78, 45 or 33 rpm)WIRE RECORDINGREEL-TO-REEL TAPECASSETTE TAPEfer process, or subsequently,a cassette will henceforthbe regarded as the workingcopy, available for studyunder supervision. Thus theformula to remember is;original recording, archivecopy, working copy. in thecase of modern commercialLPs, a cassette workingcopy alone should be suf-ficient.Optimum conditions ofsafety should apply to theSound Archive. This in-cludes fire precautions, andalso control of heat andhumidity, to provide thebest atmospheric conditionsfor the preservation of re-cordings. Regular servicingof stored material will benecessary, e.g. periodicinspection and rewinding ofarchive tapes.Study of and access tothe working copies will beat the discretion of NPUcommittee and tutors.Policy re allowing membersto copy selected portionsfrom the working copiesshould be worked out by theNote that our original Committee. On no accountrecording may be a copy of are recordings to leave thesome other type of recording, archive.e.g. reel-to-reel copy of Appropriate index systemscylinders. Original recor- should be maintained fordings should never be avail- the Sound Archive. I under-able for day-to-day working stand that an arrangementpurposes or to untrained exists for the training of apersons, due to the danger selected number of mem-of erasure or damage. All bers in the use of theoriginal recordings should sound equipment, when it isbe transferred as efficiently installed.as possible onto TO archivetape, recorded full track at7+ i.p.s.
