(In)in pIobairf uilleann0 ! ] PtoRaiQ?na Narta 1377 tjimh. 29The 1977 Tionol will be held at the Neptune Hotel, Bettystown. Co. Heath. duringthe weekend 20th 22nd May next. We thus return to the venue of the firsttionol held in 1968 and from which sprang Na Piobairt Uilleann. Listingsubsequent gatherings. Bettystown j969, Ballymahon 1970, Termonfechin 1971k,Kiltegan 1975 and Enntstymofl 1976, is to recall events which successively provedthe wisdom of the decision taken by the pipers who attended the first meetingto form an or anizatiofl of their own.The demand for pipes continues unabated and at last, it seems, it is nowcreating its own 6upply. All pipe and reed makers known to the committee havebeen invited to bring their wares to the Tionol for display and, sale, and ifanybody has been overlooked ise ask him to accept our apologies and hereby invitehim to attend and take part in this open market. To mention the places where pipes, to some degree or other, are being made is tomake a circuit of the country. Deny. Ballymefla. Belfast, Shercock, Dundalk,!jalahide, Dublin, Aughrim. New Boss, waterford, KilkennY, Cork. Kerry, Glare,Gaiway, Mayo immediately come to mind.. An observant reader may notice the jumpfros Dublin to Aughrim and ask, What, no Monkatown?. As a ray of hope forpipemaking, the December issue of, the home magazine of Gambaltas CeoltoiriEireanfl announced the appointment of two fulitime apprentices and already housedin the comfortable workshop of Culturiann na hEireann. a dream come true, whichmight well portend the creation of a whole new generation of instrument makersi i i Ireland. What marvels the Lord worked for us was the first thought in ourheads on hearing the good news but alas as ever it was just another play in thegame of: imagistics- for which that organization is now notorious. Even as thisbubble was being released to attract the gaze of an admiring public. Culturlarfla t ireann stood possessed of three pieces of equipment, a cobblers last azttwo files, an unlikely stock from which to develop a new line of craftsmen, butsufficient , perhap , to wheedle money from the Department of the aeltacht orthe Industrial Development Authority.Sets of pipes are not yet in adequateS UPP 1 Y and one hears of fabulous pricesbein paid by people ma 4 ly anxious to acquire a: full set, Prices asked for apractise set range from I$5 to 80. If such are silver mounted and with ivoryfittings one can expect to ny through the nose, but if furnished with moremodest fitttng 3 one should consider whether the ,price asked is based on areasonable return to the maker for his time, craftmanship and materials or onthe freight rule of what the traffic will bear. In either case the articleoffered should meet three basic requirements, set out here in order ofimportance. (1) It should be in tune, ( il) play easily, and (ill) look nice.Sets not meeting these requirements should be left with their makers.t
