(123)TWILIGHTHereunder further corr idence from. Captain O Neill.Chicago, December 30th. 1913.Your letter of the 15th inst. which came to hand yester-day was more than welcome for various reasons. Yourexpressed sentiments acd the spirit which prompts yourremittance for a copy of my latest. contribution to acherished cause are conspicuous)Y praiseworthy. Nailedwith this acknowledgment s the volume which I trustwill not fall short of you: expectations.Flattering reviews in the press from many quarters, andappreciative, comments in other ways, are all that couldbe desired but orders are disappointinglY few. Not thatI was over sanguine - far from it, being taught by sadexperience - but one would he justified in hoping for areasonable patronage for a work so uncommon, interestingand comprehensive as Irish Minstrels and Musicians.Irish indifference paralyzes optimism, and discourageseffort. The human strata which comprises membership inIrish Societies - fraternal, religious or convivial, regard any expenditure in the direction of intellectualluxuries or wants prohibitive which exceeds the standarddollar. In this land of high prices, the book which canbe purchased for one dollar is not very pretentious.Should I be fortunate enough to be reinbursed for evenhalf my outlay, not considering years of applicationand persistent effort I would feel satisfied. Theselling price 2.5O or iO/6d. minus postage or expresscharges, commission etc., is in reality less than thecost of publication.Religious organisations propaganda and church extensionled, fostered and forced by the most powerful influencein the world monopolize the energies of our race, withthe exception of their undoubted talents for agitationand conspiracy. Every organized effort not affiliatedwith the church or encouraged by the clergy seems doomed.I find that gift books are borrowed at a distance ofmany miles, yet seldom does any one think of buying one.Hoping to hear from you again. I have the honour to beYours with great respect,Franci.s ONeill.O _O O O O O OO0A KERRY WEDDING l 12The expense to a visitor is about 6s.6d.
