He was so excited by the sweetness of the singing, he buckled on thepipes end played the tune. The following morning his finger nail was so sore he had tohave a doctor. By then Mici Cumba realised the singer was a fairy woman. The doctorremoved a grain of barley from the finger which healed but remained lifeless. A travellingwoman who understood the music, hearing him play asked what had happened him. Heexplained, whereupon she told him to refrain from playing for one month and she mightcure him. When the month was up she again met him and persuaded him to go to the holywell where the other pipers were playing and making money. Reluctantly he went andthen finally somebody asked him to play. When he played they thought the cups on thedresser were dancing. He was kept playing all night and it was acknowledged he was thebest piper in Ireland.ONeill has an account of Midi Cumba (Micheal OSullivan) in his Irish Ministrels andMusicians, 263/8 with a fine photo of him. The archives contain a recording of hisplaying Gol na mBan san Ar, a transcription of which appeared in Ceol III
