20211841 from Mary Parker, a prol flc contributor to his collection. This fine folk tunewas first printed in ONeills Irish Music three years ago.Mr. Hudsons manuscript book, which is marked Vol. 3, contains 127 tunes, the first being No. 243 and the last 370, leaving about one-fourth of the book blank orunfinished. \Vithout doubt, considerable of its contents remain unpublished, and thecompilers knowledge of the Irish language is evidenced by the neat Irish script inwhich maiiy of the names were written.Interesting manuscript collections of Irish music, including more or less unpub-lished tunes, and variants of others already in print, have been kindly forwarded tothe writer from various points in Ireland, and even from London. But what can be done with them? The apathy of the overwhelming majority ofthe Irish people at home and abroad precludes their publication, except at a financialsacrifice. A limited repertory of popular thread-bare tunes appears to be all thatamateur or professional Irish musicians care to be burdened with.Of course, folk tunes may be found useful to illustrate essays and debates on thetonality and structure of traditional music. Yet who but reactionaries, or theenthusiasts of the Irish Polk Song Society, will give them even the courtesy of morethan a passing thought?Well may we pause and consider if Irish music has any future as a distinct vitalentity, in spite, of all the efforts of the enthusiasts to revive and popularise it; or mustit be classed with the antiquities and referred to the musical arch eologists?Ievtn Irish 3 oIk SongsFROM THE HUDSON COLLECTION.NOTES on some of the airs contained in the William Elliott Hudson Collection, andpublished for the first time in this Journal.
