50They crawled from the ditches and out of the sewers,Ten thousand or more of them six-legged hoors.Rally ra etc. They covered the ground like a black shiny sheet,So I knew it was time for to sound the retreat.I turned and ran, full of loathing and dreadAnd from sweet Miltown Malbay that morning I fled.Rally ra etc.Oh the black widow spider is not a nice toy,And the African cobra is one ugly boy,But both of them surely are cuddly and fairCompared to the man-eating cockroach from Clare.Rally ra etc.Ceol na hEireannEvery song is, obviously, written by an individual, but one of the definitionsof a folksong is that it has been accepted by enough people and has circulated tosuch an extent that differing versions have arisen. Our second song here, TheRecession, comes ready-versioned, thus accelerating its progress towards aplace in the tradition. It was written by Eily Buckley of Millstreet Town, co.Cork, and neatly illustrates the saying that one never finishes a work of art, onejust walks away from it. Eily has revisited this piece several times since itsbirth, recasting it as the times seemed to demand. The version dated 1991 istranscribed from Eilys singing. The other two are her own drafts from earlierdates. Take your pick.Eily has also written several other songs. Readers may have been presentfor, or have heard of, her rendering of her own song in praise of Breanndn OBeaglaoich in Hennessys of Miltown Malbay a couple of years ago. It was oneof those hilarious occasions the memory of which one cherishes to the grave. All her songs contain, as this one does, lines that reflect her own kindly nature. When Eily is not writing songs she is known as a considerable mover-and-shaker in her own locality, and further afield as a card-carrying member of theinfamous Sliabh Luachra Bunch of set dancers.Irish Music 51THE RECESSION (1991) .He! lo my friends I just dropped in to see you one and all. Itsnice to see you look so well and Im glad I came to call. Idlike to stay a lit tle while and share some points of view, And: __ __sing a song of this and that and I hope youll join in too.Hello my friends I just dropped in to see you one and all,Its nice to see you look so well and Im glad I came to call.Id like to stay a little while and share some points of viewAnd sing a song of this and that, and I hope youll join in too.Theres a cut-down here and a shut-down there,Were sick of this recession,The only thing we get from itIs ulcers and depression.Twas Charlie gave us all the cash and told us Spend away,Have money for a second car and a second holiday. He told us it was guaranteed, our future was in clover,And just as fast he told us that the good times were all over.He cut down on the Health Boards and he cut down on the jobs.He stopped the lads on welfare doing work for extra bobs.He cut the blind and handicapped, the man must have no feeling,And when he cut poor Michael Mills, the pain just sent him reeling.Theyre closing down our hospital wards and letting nurses go.Our babies will be born at home like they were long long ago.Our doctors will be idle and their gear upon the shelf. If you want to get your gall-stones out you must take them out yourself.V
