46Ceol na hEireann Irish Music47Two New SongsFor many people the words traditional song, or folksong suggest a type ofsong whose primary characteristic is that it is old. Think of the expressions, the songs our fathers loved, or give us one of the old songs. In actual fact, ofcourse, it is the style that is old, and new songs that fit the old style have alwaysbeen welcome. There is quite an extraordinary amount of song-making activitygoing on all over the country, and we intend to bring you samples of it fromtime to time.In keeping with the unfortunate times that are in it, we present two recentlycomposed songs of misfortune. The first concerns the troubles of oneindividual, while the second has a broader scope, addressing, if we may use thejargon, the macro-economic sphere. However we think you will find them a bitmore light-hearted than their subjects (a plague of insects and economiccutbacks respectively) might lead you to expect. The first song, The Miltown Cockroach, is from the pen of Con Fada ODrisceoil, a gentleman of the Cork persuasion. He is notorious for havingwritten three other songs. His first two, St. Finbarr, and The Pool Song, havebeen published in the Jimmy Crowley Songbook. His third is presented here, and his most recent effusion, on the legal tribulations of the Miltown Fourteen, was first performed, to an enthusiastic reception, at the recent Willie ClancySummer School. When not writing songs, (which is quite often), Con plays thebutton accordion in one of the best dance bands in the country, The Four-StarTrio.Description on reverse of photograph:Pat Mitchell, Harfford , Conn.V
