42Ceol na hEireann Irish Music43record them.Liam was never recorded by others than the commercial companies. See, thetape recorders came too late. He could have been recorded in the fifties if hewas out playing in sessions, but he wasnt that kind of fellow, he didnt play insessions at all like we do. He only played in concerts and radio. I think itwasnt a norm in his day to go out and play in sessions. It wasnt done verymuch, it started to come in his time. But then he wasnt that kind of man thatwould go out then.He continued playing up to the day he died. I remember the last story hetold me. The little house where they were in, it wasnt very big, a bungalow, and he used to play inside. And you know, he said, there was a man came upthe other morning in a horse and cart, and he had hay on it. And he stoppedoutside the door cause he heard the music. He said, do you know what he did?He turned the horse around, and he backed the cart right in against the door, and he got in and he laid down the hay, listening to it. And the horse acrossthis way... Id say that would only happen in Ireland. Funny, isnt it?Robert van 1)/JkEditorial Note: To preserve the natural flavour of the talkno editorial changes have been made in this article.Photographs from theTom Busby Collection in theNa Plobairl Uilleann Archive(2)No details - Unknown Fzver7
