SUMMARY:Notes & Narratives - Irish Traditional Music in Germany: Nationalism\, Nostalgia & Intercultural Transactions
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday 17th September for Notes & Narratives with Felix Morgenstern. \nNotes & Narratives is a monthly series that brings traditional music\, song and dance to life through performance\, storytelling and conversation with leading traditional Irish musicians artists and researchers. This month’s speaker\, Felix Morgenstern\, will discuss ‘Irish Traditional Music in Germany: Nationalism\, Nostalgia & Intercultural Transactions’. This talk locates the experiences of German Irish traditional music practitioners\, past and present\, in the broader framework of modern European history. \nDrawing on over ten years of interviews and historical inquiry\, Felix will demonstrate how German musicians’ adoption of Irish traditional music has bridged the shameful disjuncture caused by the Nazi appropriation of German folk music. Additionally\, Felix demonstrates the advantage—both musically and in status and authority—of middle-class\, relatively wealthy German musicians with the means to travel to Ireland\, where they acquire prestige and musical expertise through their interactions with local practitioners. \nAll welcome – we hope to see you there! \n\no Na Píobairí Uilleann\, 15 Henrietta Street\, Dublin 1\no Thursday 17th September\, 8:30pm\no Admission: €10 (€5 unwaged / student / retired)\no Online ticket sales close Thursday 17th September\, 4pm. Tickets will also be available on the door.\n\nFor those unable to attend in person\, the event will be live streamed free via NPU-TV. \nSupported by The Arts Council

SUMMARY:Try the Pipes - ICH National Heritage Week
DESCRIPTION:By the 1960s very few people in Ireland were playing the pipes and far fewer\, perhaps only five\, were engaged in the making of the instrument. It was a matter of grave concern that the art would decline further and so Na Píobairí Uilleann (NPU) was founded in 1968 at grassroots level by pipers themselves. \nTo celebrate National Heritage Week 2026’s theme of “Heritage At Risk“\, NPU will be hosting a Try the Pipes event\, an event designed to encourage people to take up the pipes.  Try the Pipes events are regularly hosted by Na Píobairí Uilleann. Events feature a short performance/demonstration by pipers followed by the opportunity to get your hands on the instrument and try playing them yourself! We hope to see you there! \nThe event will be free & open to the public. \n📅Wednesday 19th August\, 2-5pm \n📍Na Píobairí Uilleann HQ\, 15 Henrietta Street\, D01 N504 \nThis project received funding through a joint initiative by the Department of Culture\, Communications and Sport and the National Monuments Service to support practices inscribed on Ireland’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. \nIreland’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage is managed by the Department of Culture\, Communications and Sport and can be viewed at https://nationalinventoryich.ccs.gov.ie/ . The National Monuments Service is delighted to support this initiative that highlights the strong relationship between tangible and intangible heritage.
