Piping on the plinth: public statues and the commemoration of uilleann piping
Verena Commins with piper Pádraic Keane
Raising statues and monuments is a relatively recent way of celebrating Irish traditional music, reflecting the growing power and authority of Irish traditional music within Irish cultural narratives. Amongst the monuments to Irish traditional musicians raised in Ireland are a number of plaques and memorials commemorating uilleann pipers, with no less than five life-sized statues portraying uilleann pipe players. In this talk, Verena Commins examines processes central to the commission, design and construction of these piping monuments, contextualises them within the broader theme of public commemoration and considers their reception and ongoing significance.
During the talk, each of the five pipers will be represented musically by piper Pádraic Keane.
