Píobaire, An 8 1 12 20120206 I T IS PROBABLE that some readers will be fa- miliar with these photos of Séamus which are displayed at the Séamus Ennis Cultural Centre at Naul, Co. Dublin. I don’t recall him ever wearing anything other than a grey dou- ble-breasted suit with white shirt and tie, what- ever the occasion. Whenever I saw him perform he started sessions by strapping on the pipes over his jacket. Then, much later, when he was fully fuelled and warmed up to full power, he’d stand up, remove the jacket, put the pipes back on and loosen his tie. My pho- tos of him with musician friends in February 1966 show him, sure enough, playing in suit and waistcoat with unloosened tie! Unlike the close atmosphere often generated at lengthy folk club sessions, these were relatively sedate meetings at a private house. Séamus was staying at the home of Jenny and Mike Robinson in Portland Road, London. Jenny met him when she ran The Troubadour Folk Club and booked him to perform there. During a period when he was recuperating from a spell of ill health, she offered to care for him. During his three month stay, she had the idea of inviting musicians around on Wednes- day evenings to be company for Séamus.
