Píobaire, An 7 2 10 20110510 Eran Hilleli 10 N EWS reaches us from piper Malka Mitzner that Israel now has a group of uilleann pipers that meets every two months to “sit outside talking about pipes, playing some tunes, learning new tunes”. Sounds very familiar! Members attend from all over Israel, and the meet- ings take place in a pastoral area near Jerusalem. The group are building up a repertoire, with a shared list which already includes tunes like “The Humours of Lisheen”, “Jerry’s Beaver Hat”, Merrily Kissed the Quaker”, The Kesh Jig”, “Sí Beag, Sí Mhór” and “Planxty Irwin”, and a recent encounter with Roy Becker added “The Four Courts” to the playlist. They are also learning to make their own reeds, with Uri Miles as teacher. They co-operate in learning by circulating sug- gested new tunes before their gatherings, with the piper who suggested each item playing it for the group in a ‘piper’s chair’ session. Na Píobairí Uilleann wish the Israeli group every success and years of musical enjoyment. ~ REPORTS ~ UILLEANN PIPING IN ISRAEL L-R: Tal Korenberg, Ofer Hopstone Groman, Ohad Taub, Roy Becker Kristal, Malka Mitzner, Uri Miles, and Israel Korenberg on the Bodhran.
