Píobaire, An 7 2 4 20110510 4 prevailed in Dublin for over two hundred and fifty years The exhibition lasted three weeks in April and attracted many visitors from Ireland and abroad. The first week of the display in- cluded the PIPERLINK show, comprising an inter- active lecture and musical performance. With commentary from Seán Donnelly, as well as pip- ing from Tommy Keane and Donnacha Dwyer, the event was hosted by Muireann Nic Amh- laoibh, the recent recipient of TG4 Gradam Cheoil, Singer of the Year FUND RAISING TO MEET THE COST OF THE PIPECRAFT TRAINING CENTRE M embers throughout the world will ulti- mately benefit by the pipe making venture but running the training centre will cost approx- imately €600,000 over the next five years. We will as an international society, have to explore every possible fundraising venture to achieve the twin goals of availability of top class sets of pipes being available within a reasonable time span and helping everyone who wishes to be- come a pipe maker or repairer of top class in- struments to realise that ambition. Ultimately we plan to will conduct full-time courses in the various aspects of pipe making and reed making. NPU is pleased to announce that popular singer/songwriter Damien Dempsey and his band are kindly performing a fundraising concert in support of our PipeCraft initiative on Friday, April 29 at the Grand Social, Liffey Street,Dublin at 9pm. Damien has been hugely supportive of our efforts and has been using his public profile as an advocate for our pipe making initiative and cam- paign, and we appreciate for Damien’s generosity and practical help and advocacy. SCHOLARSHIPS N PU has for many years offered scholar- ships to aspiring students of uilleann pip- ing and pipe-making and we are very pleased to see that many of the recipients over the years have gone to develop their skills as performers and makers. I would like to draw attention to the opportunity for interested parties to apply before the deadline this year which is, May 31st. EVENTS Among those coming up are: • Doran Piping Tionol from 6th to 8th May in Span- ish Point, co. Clare • Howard Summer School in late June for a week of piping for beginners to advanced pipers in Alston, close to the Lake District in England • Great Northern Tionól – Minnesota • Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy takes place in Mil- town Malbay, Co. Clare from July 2nd to 9th • South Sligo Summer School – Tubber curry • Joe Mooney Summer School – Drumshanbo • Catskills Irish Arts Week – New York • German Summer Tionól – Proitzer Muehle NOTE: Correction in the last edition of An Píobaire: the annual Tionól 2011 will run from 27 to 29 May 2011 in Step House Hotel, Bor- ris, Co.
