Music for the Uilleann Pipes collected before the Famine JIMMY O’BRIEN-MORAN (PPPCD051) Available from NPU at €18.00 (Members €16.50) T HIS IS THE SECOND SOLO ALBUM from Jimmy O’Brien-Moran, his first being Seán Reid’s Favourite, released in 1986. Jimmy has been re- searching the music of the pipers who flourished in the first half of the 19th century, with a particular focus on the celebrated Galway piper Paddy Con- neely, whose music, as notated and (sometimes) published by several different collectors, forms the content of this CD, and whose portrait, painted in 1839 by Frederic William Burton, adorns its cover. Jimmy plays the music on his Colgan set, which he received from Seán Reid. In the sleeve notes Jackie Small sums it up: “A great piper of today, interpreting the music of a great piper of the early dawn of the music of the uilleann pipes, on a classic instrument – this CD is a three-fold treasure!” 1 Reels: Take Me Tender and You’ll Have Me Always, Sixmile Bridge 2 Air: The Old Coolin 3 Jigs: The Humours of Glendart, The Wea- ried Lad 4 Hornpipes: An Staicín Eornan, The Gar- den of Daisies 5 Slip Jigs: Kiss in the Shelter, Jig Polltóg, Is Cuma Liom 6 Polkas: All the Way to Galway, Jenny Put the Kettle On 7 Air: An Caisideach Bán 8 Jigs: The Two-Penny Jig, Sarsfield’s Quickstep, The Piper's Finger 9 Reels: Lady Eyre's Reel, The Flogging Reel 10 Jigs: I was Born for Sport, An Cearc 's an Coilleach 11 Air: Máire Bheag Ní Ghibhearlain 12 Air: Patrick O'Donovan, the Piper 13 Reels: The Sunny Hills of Spiddal, The Fanny of Galway, The Roundstone Lasses 14 Jigs: The Ladies' March to the Ballroom, The Humours of Maam 15 March: Tow Row Row 16 Jig: Stad, a Rógaire, Stad, Stad! 17 Reels: Fair Letitia, The Lasses of Farmhill A LSO A SECOND ALBUM for Leonard Barry, this is an ensemble effort with contribu- tions from a variety of well-known traditional performers including Conor Byrne, John Carty, Rick Epping, Andy Morrow, Tony O’Connell, Cathy Jordan and Cyril O’Donoghue. 1 Jigs: Apples In Winter, Peataí Leary’s, Tom Billy's 2 Reels: The Limerick Lasses, Johnny McGhooan’s, The Laurel Tree 3 Hop jigs: Tommy O’Dea’s, The Silver Slipper, Shaving the Baby with a Spoon 4 March/Reels: Bonaparte Crossing the Rhine, Dogs among the Bushes, Gabe O’Sullivan’s
