5!utroducflon.TWENTY-THREE songs are given in the present number of the Journal, and oneair without words. Fourteen of the songs (viz. Nos. 113 and 22) wereobtained this year from Mr. Settn O Cuill, a native of Ballyvourney, Co. Cork,at present living in Dublin, who won the first prize at the Oireachtas of 1902for the best collection of folk-songs in Irish (words only). All those given herewere learnt by him in his native place. To him, as well as to those otherswhose airs appear in this collection, the grateful thanks of the Society aredue.I am glad to acknowledge assistance rendered me in various ways byProfessors Bergin, O Mille and ORahffly, Mr. Robin Flower, Mr. R. A. Foley,Dr. Douglas Hyde and Mr. Wilfrid Brown; and Mr. Martin Freeman, who hashimself collected so extensively in Ballyvourney, has again co-operated withme cordially throughout the production of this number.
